All-School Campaigners Recap

Close to fifty Vikings came out last night for the first 'All-School Campaigners.' After a lil 'speed-dating,' Megan Harvey shared some of her story and invited us to learn from her relationship mistakes.

She shared from a journal entry she wrote 5 years ago before she had given Jesus control of her relationships.

She wrote, "Lust is an instant desire that when you have it, feels more like it must be fulfilled in that moment. Although I haven't acted on lust in a way that has ruined my like, (aka, I am not pregnant) I have ruined a lot of innocent  friendships and caused myself a lot of pain because of the lust I have acted on. It's so hard to go against the my natural way of being around guys. I feel like I am hard on myself to change and I just have no idea how to do that. Changing that feels like changing who I am- I don't know where to start.

I don't know how to not constantly think about men as someone I have to win over. I don't feel accepted by anyone and I really think it's because I don't accept myself or like who I am. I feel like no one actually wants me around. The love I have for people is clouded by doubt, fear of being left, if I love them and they disappoint me it is my fault. I want to love freely, without shame. I feel like I have to justify true "love" I feel for people with motives or reasons. I hate that I love like this. I want something that I know is different. I need to make a change to get a change- I just don't know what that change needs to be."

We then divided by grades and had some pretty deep discussions, answering the following questions:

  • Where have you received your information about sex, dating, and relationships?
  • What you think about dating?
  • What do you think God thinks about dating and how we 'date' in our culture?
  • Have the dating/marriage relationships that have been modeled for you been ones you want to emulate?
  • John 10:10 says that "The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I have come that you might have life, and life to the full." What do you think the enemy uses to destroy relationships?
  • What do you think is God's desire for relationships?
  • What are you looking for in a girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse?
  • How can you become like the person you're looking for?

My favorite answer of the night came from one of my high school friends who wishes to remain anonymous.

When asked "Where have you received your information about sex, dating, and relationships?" he responded, "Honestly, when I went on my first date, I e-how'd "How to date.'

This week we're taking Sunday night off to watch the Super Bowl, but will start back on Feb. 10th.  That night we'll have a panel of all your YL leaders answering the hard 'sex & dating' questions you wrote down last night.

Feb 3- No Campaigners due to SuperBowl
Feb 10-The L-Word, week 2, A 'Q & A panel' of your leaders answering hard questions.
Feb 17- The L-Word, week 3: A fancy celebration dinner where the guys serve the gals.
Feb 23- The L-Word, week 4: A special presentation of a 30 minute play called 'Broken Heart' put on by your YL leaders)

All School Campaigners are held on Sunday nights from 7:47-8:59pm at 3530 Edgefield Rd (The Church at Edgefield). Parents, we would love to have some snacks/drinks to serve on these nights. If you are able to send something, would you shoot Megan Harvey an email and let her know what night is best and what you would like to bring.
