Last night at the #NWYL Hoe-down Drew shared about how we all want to be accepted. Some of us want it so badly that we'll turn'up some ranch dressing standing on the dinner table at Windy Gap. (Just ask someone who was there in case that doesn't make sense.)
We want to be accepted by our friends, our coaches, our parents, our teachers, everyone. We even want to be accepted by God. That's why we try to make sure our 'good deeds' outweigh our 'bad deeds.' But that's not how God works.
Drew said that God loves us not based on how good we are, but based on how good Jesus is. He told us how Jesus chose his disciples. In Mark 1:16-20 we see that Jesus chose misfits, outcasts, and ordinary people to follow him. Jesus didn't choose people who were deserving. Jesus didn't choose people based on good looks, popularity, social status, wealth, or intelligence.
Jesus chose 12 guys.
Some were fisherman who flunked out of school.
Thomas was a doubter.
Judas was a traitor.
Matthew was a thief.
Simon was renegade.
He chose them, not because of how they performed, but because He made them, loved them, and wanted to be in a relationship with Him. And Jesus didn't stop there. He used those 12 ragamuffins to change the course of history. So much so that 2000 years later we're talking about them by name.
The crazy thing is Jesus extends the same invitation to us that he did to the disciples. "Come, follow me." We follow hundreds of people on Twitter, but following them hasn't really changed our lives. There is only one person we can follow who will change our lives. His name is Jesus.
